The Adriatic Sea can be glimpsed among the sun-flowers fields and olive groves between the villages of Massignano and Montefiore dell’Aso perched on two hills dominating the area. Both villages are typical Medieval hamlets with their bell towers rising over the roofs of the old houses around them.

An old farmhouse built at the beginning of the 20th century, Il Melograno Bed and Breakfast is just outside Massignano. The ochre yellow colour of the outside is mirrored in the different shades of yellow inside creating a warm welcoming atmosphere. In the garden birds have their own little wooden house hanging from the branch of a cherry tree and a bird bath under the big fig trees. The birds seem to appreciate these “personal facilities” and have scattered seeds of several plants including some majestic sunflowers all over the garden

ll Melograno has three double bedrooms, each with a fresh spring feeling. Each is named after the hand painted flowers on the “Arte Povera” furniture: Papaveri, Calle and Genziane. All the bedrooms have internet connection, air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms with water massage shower and, to offer privacy to the guests, have a private entrance. The Genziane and Papaveri bedrooms share the same main entrance and can be used independently or together as a little family suite. In the Calle bedroom there is an old linen curtain with beautifully embroidered initials which was part of the trusseau of a one-hundred-year old lady from Trentino.

B&B  "Il Melograno"

Annelise and Tomaso moved to this area after working over 20 years in London. The house was originally in a run down state. After ten months of refurbishment works, with  Annelise’s ideas and Tomaso’s artistic flair, the house has acquired a vibrant look and feel and it is almost impossible to recognise it from  the old pictures.

The long English experience is reflected in many items of furniture and objects, including the collection of “Botanic Garden” plates, coffee and tea sets. On the old Sussex pine wash stand there is a visitors’ book  where one of the guests has written  “in this delightful place we have found the best of the  English, Trentino- Alto Adige and Le Marche hospitality” .

Another guest also noticed some Provencal influence in the colours and the many lavender plants in the garden. Bunches of lavender and other dried flowers hang from the beams of the guests’ living room where you will also find several guidebooks  in different languages and two large maps, one  of Italy and the other of the area. Tomaso is a keen photographer and painter and  some of his large photographs of flowers and oil paintings decorate the walls.

Annelise takes me to her “kingdom”: the kitchen. On the way she shows me her home made  jams  which fill the shelves of an old restored  cupboard. Some are quite original, like the apricot jam with almonds and cardamom or the traditional Seville orange marmalade which she learned to make in England.

The kitchen is well equipped and it is clear that Annelise is an enthusiastic cook, expert and creative at the same time. There are a lot of kitchen tools, jars of spices, big jars with different types of flour for baking bread and cakes ...everything is well organized and gives the feeling of a lively and busy environment.

This is where  Annelise, taking inspiration from her many  recipe books and using her own creativity, bakes the bread and cakes which guests can enjoy in the cosy breakfast room or under the cherry trees in the garden during the summer months.

There are cakes with a melting chocolate heart, cakes with fresh apricots in the summer, cupcakes and buns with lemon icing, as well as different types of bread: with yoghurt and whole wheat flour covered with sunflower, poppy and linseeds, typical of Alto Adige.  Muffins and brownies are instead a reminder of  England where  Tomaso and Annelise lived before reinventing their life in the Marche countryside.

“It has been a great change” they say, but it has been well repaid by giving them the chance to enjoy  both the  Mediterranean climate in an unspoilt natural environment and the beauty of a starry sky which they couldn’t appreciate in London because of all the artificial lights at night...”but here the natural light is beautiful  and the  skies are breathtaking”. Benvenuti a Massignano!
