Le Marche is a
mixture of hills and valleys which descend from the Apennines towards the
sea. See below villages of ancient and historical origins can be found when
travelling inland, with medieval settlements surrounded by walls, fifteenth
century castles and renaissance fortresses, which dominate the hill tops.
It
is these hills that represent the best area for the flourishing prosperity
of grape-viones and for the production of the best quality grapes. Both the
strenght of the sun and right equilibrium with its heat, enable the grapes to
produce a high sugary strenght and a delicate smell, important elements for
producing good wines.
There are really good wines in the whole region. Wine
is grown by many small vineyards and some of medium size, are emerging. The
public authorities have guided and coordinated their production from the
fields to the market.
Le
Marche has a type of wine for each district: the Conero red wine, Rosso
Conero, tastes of the strong land that gave birth to it, it has the fibre of
its extracters and if its chisellers, who know every aspect of it; the
Piceno red wine, Rosso
Piceno, which extending his area until province of
Ancona, and Rosso Piceno Superiore in particular, has a strong and
sentimental hold on people from the south of Le Marche; wines from the
Macerata area, Colli Maceratesi
and Vernaccia di
Serrapetrona, and from the
Fermo area, Falerio, expreme the
sweetness and hidden domestic qualities that
surround the warmth of the people.
The wines of the Pesaro area, Bianchello
del Metauro and Colli
Pesaresi, recall the Romagna flavours and are endowed
with that sweet tone of the language spoken by the people of the Gallic part
of Le Marche. The success of Verdicchio is not surprising,
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
and Verdicchio di
Matelica, a golden colour, slightly
bitter and surprinsingly simple, suitable with sea foods. Since then another
three DOC wines have been authorized: in 1987 Lacrima di Morro
d'Alba, a
precious wine, limited in its production and with a special taste, and the Esino, born in 1995, once regarded as a table wine.
Two types of wine from
an only land which corresponds to the noble area of the Castelli del
Verdicchio. Of the Piceno wines in 2001, Offida has been considered of
maximum quality, giving other locally grown and produced wines great worth.
A new technology for wine refinement, based on a well-established tradition,
is lately being developed. The ageing of red wines (Rosso Conero and Rosso
Piceno Superiore) has restored the custom of the "bottaie",
a place where there are oak-wood barrels, which convey the idea of the
typical winery.
Other new technologies, such as the "barriche" or the
moderate ageing of white wines, among the Verdicchio, are useful to increase
the wine scent and taste and to spur even the most alert consumer.
