Smirra is a village within the Comune of Cagli. It borders with the neighbouring Comune of Acqualagna, famous for its truffle fair and for being one of the main areas for truffle hunting. Smirra is located west of the Burano river and is 4.9 km from Cagli. The village had its origin and grew in the proximity of a byzantine fort erected to defend a Roman bridge along the way. The bridge was destroyed during world war II, whilst the byzantine tower is now part in a villa in neo-gothic style named Villa Fontalba.
Description
Casale Bizantino is located in an old village within the municipality of Cagli, offering panoramic views of Monte Catria, Monte Acuto, Monte Petrano and Monte Nerone. The house is entirely built in pink Furlo stone.
Casale Bizantino combines the character of a traditional rural building with the beauty and functionality of its architectural features and layout. Galleries and staircases create an interesting distribution of the different internal spaces - from the living and working areas to the bedrooms - which is at the same time charming and extremely functional and versatile. On the ground floor, the potential is also there to create new, independent living areas or workshops.
The access to the main residence is via a terraced staircase, by a wall oven in perfect working order. Casale Bizantino extends to circa 480 sqm over three levels: basement, ground floor and first floor. On the basement, there are two large cellars and three store rooms, one of which is as large as the cellar. The ground floor, where the main part of the residence is, hosts 6 rooms, with at the centre the large kitchen with its equipped cooking area, a living area and the dining room by the large fireplace; around the large kitchen is the living room, a bedroom with bathroom and three more bedrooms with loft, all restored in a warm mediterranean style. To the right of the kitchen, a staircase leads to the first floor, comprising two spacious rooms and a bathroom. All the rooms feature wood-beamed ceilings, conservatively restored in keeping with the historic character of the house.
Land
The property includes 8,900 sqm of land, consisting of the surrounding courtyard, lawns and woods. The property can be accessed from the nearby village via a short tree-lined path ending directly at the house, surrounded by centuries-old oak trees.
