We suggest that you start in a particularly characteristic place that has a rarefied atmosphere, that has the sense of being almost suspended in time: Genga. This little town clinging to the craggy walls that keep watch over the valley is a point of access to the secret world of the spectacular caves, Grotte di Frasassi. Here you can indulge all five senses, making sure to enjoy the surprises from the tricks of light, the chalk formations, the silence, and lofty grandeur of the spaces.
Nearby you’ll find the medieval San Vittore and the 11th Century abbey of di San Vittore alle Chiuse, one of the region’s most important monastic establishments that is an exceptional example of Romanesque architecture in central Italy.
In this atmosphere of peace and relaxation you’ll also find the stabilimento termale di San Vittore, situated in an exceptionally picturesque position, with a backdrop of wood-covered mountains, at the foot of the evocative Gola di Frasassi crossed by the Sentino river.
As well as boasting a pretty piazza and an interesting historical centre, Matelica’s Museo Piersanti is not to be missed, as rich and varied as the town itself, and constituting one of the most prestigious cultural institutes of Le Marche.
Castelraimondo is the ideal place to finish your day. The Cassero, the 36 metre-high crenellated tower that characterizes the town, is today considered one of the so called ‘rocche celesti’ (heavenly fortresses) thanks to its particular position and lack of light pollution. It is perfect for observing the skies, and a romantic evening spot, perfect for dreamers.
Nearby you’ll find the XV century Castello di Lanciano, and in the surrounding area the Kimben SPA and Borgo Lanciano Relais.
How to get there
By car:
The area is easily accessible from East following the highway Ancona Fabriano Roma SS76/bis. From North and South, exit the A14 at the pay-point of Ancona nord and follow the directions for SS76/bis, Fabriamo-Roma. If you are coming from West, follow the SS76/bis in the opposite direction (towards Ancona) and exit at the Sassoferrato-Genga exit, then follow the directions for Frasassi caves. By plane: The nearest airport is the airport Ancona-Falconara, which is about 40 km far. By boat:
