 La Valigia dei Sogni

Lorenzo Lotto

Marche’s landscapes sometimes seem as though they have been painted by a masterly and skilful hand, they often take on intense colours like those of oil, and were probably an inspiration for the famous painter Lorenzo Lotto, originally from Veneto, but who moved to Marche in the 16th century. Admire the works of Lotto and on visits to these villages and towns, perhaps you will catch sight of a few corners that often look the same as they did back then. Have good trip.

Not  be missed

In Jesi, you will find the Pianetti Gallery in which it’s possible to admire some of Lotto’s paintings. In addition to the famous artist’s paintings, we suggest you look up whilst in the stucco gallery: over 70 metres of Rococo stuccos that come one after another in volutes, riches and flowers. It’s absolutely marvellous for art lovers of this period. Interesting, as always in Jesi, is the historic Pergolesi Theatre, one of the most elegant in the region.

Cingoli is known as the ‘Balcony of Marche’ for its panoramic position, from where you can see the surrounding hills, the valleys that produce the Verdicchio grape and the sea. Here you will find one of the last monumental works by Lotto: the Blue Madonna.

Ancona is a coastal city that is built up on a precipitous headland by the sea and one that we invite you to discover with care. The Church of San Francesco alle Scale alone deserves a visit for its beautiful, florid, gothic-style portal; inside you will find the altarpiece by Lotto. A little further towards the valleys, works of Lotto are exhibited at the Podesti Gallery, as well as those by Crivelli and Tiziano.

Recanati, an elegant cultural centre, also well-known for being the birthplace of Giacomo Leopardi, one of the most important Italian poets. At the Colloredo Mels Museum you will find three important works by Lorenzo Lotto, amongst which is the famous ‘The Annunciation’.

Loreto is one of the principal centres of Marian worship in Italy. Its notoriety is linked to the Santa Casa of Nazareth, which tradition states was brought here in flight by angels. Inside the Sanctuary, it’s possible to admire the frescoes of Melozzo da Forlo, Luca Signorelli and Pomarancio’s Room. The final extraordinary works of Lorenzo Lotto are kept in the Diocesano Museum. A magnificent collection of Urbino majolica and various tapestries by Raphael are also exhibited in the museum.
There are two other small villages that keep works of art by Lotto: Monte San Giusto houses them in the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria di Pieta, which has Lorenzo Lotto’s painting of the Crucifixion, and Mogliano houses Lotto’s ‘Madonna in Glory with Saints’ in the Church of Santa Maria.
