Open Wine Cellars
A journey to discover Bianchello, Rosso and Verdicchio
“How many of you have wanted to discover a bit more about how your favourite wine is produced? Have any of you closed your eyes and imagined smelling the crushed grapes and wood of the barrels? All of this is possible, in the many wine cellars of Le Marche. For 19 years the event ‘Cantine Aperte’- (Open Wine Cellars), organised by the Movimento Turismo del Vino, has allowed the public to visit their cellars and taste their prestigious wines.
Don’t Miss
Bianchello del Metauro
“Bianchello del Metauro” is produced in the valley where the Gola del Furlo opens into the Adriatic sea. Our journey starts at the little town of
Barchi, an enchanting medieval city. The piazza is in the heart of the historical centre and enclosed by medieval city walls. Here, just a short distance from the Palazzo Della Rovere, the ancient buildings fascinate the onlooker in their display of bygone power.
At the gates of the Gola del Furlo lies Fossombrone, initially called Foruum Sempronii. This marvelous little town has conserved architectural remains from different epochs, which combine with an incredible refinement and elegance. Walk through the narrow streets of the town and take note of the lancet arches of the medieval buildings and the beautiful stylistic influences that characterise the Corso. If you enjoy taking walks in nature, head towards
Urbino, to discover the so-called “Marmitte”
Fano, a beautiful and historical small town which owes its name to the roman temple dedicated to the Goddess Fortuna, around which it grew up. The traces of its prosperous past as a roman colony are still visible in the Arco d’Augusto, in parts of the wall, and in its statues and mosaics. The art and culture of more recent ages are also visible, in the Corte Malatestiana, il Teatro della Fortuna, and the Chiesa di San Petro al Vallum.

Portonovo is one of the most evocative places in the Riviera del Conero. Overlooking the sea is the enchanting little church, the chiesetta di Santa Maria, a Romanesque masterpiece of the 11th Century. Along the beach, once a landing point for Turkish ships, you can find many historical sites: the tower of the Guardia erected in 700s to defend against pirates, and the Napoleonic Fort, a military bulwark which now serves as a hotel.
